SIXTEEN

“Great results can be achieved with small forces. One companion can turn the tide of any battle.”

-The Tenets

Bug was covered in a glowing red lattice of energy.

The lattice held her down, for now, and depleted the energy that fueled her transformation into a beast. The only problem was that the lattice was temporary, and Bug’s recovery in beast form reacted faster than the orb could drain her in this state.

If we didn’t fully drain the beast, in a few seconds, she would break free of the lattice and attempt to kill us. Not a scenario I wanted to think about.

Nine released one of the orbs.

The sphere of black energy slammed into the beast. It roared in agony, drawing blood and forcing Bug against the wall. She clawed the floor and wall, leaving deep gouges wherever she struck.

“Now, Port!” Nine yelled. “Give her the blood orb!”

I released the second blood orb.

It reinforced the lattice with a red glow, restraining and draining energy from the beast as it struggled and roared, staring at me with death in its eyes.

Nine unleashed the second black orb and waited.

The second black orb descended on Bug’s head and exploded. Black energy filled the area where Bug lay, obscuring her from sight. For a moment, I thought Nine had killed her.

That’s when I saw Bug shift back.

The reversal of the shift was fast. One moment there was a large werewolf-like creature on the floor, a few seconds later, it was Bug.

A flood of relief hit me as I approached.

Nine held up a hand, stopping me in my tracks.

“You wait here,” she said. “I need to make sure she’s fully back.”

Nine formed another orb of black and red energy and approached the prone body of Bug. She turned her over gently and materialized her medical bag. The orb hovered near her head as she worked. She removed some instruments I didn’t recognize and examined Bug.

Satisfied, she absorbed the orb and motioned for me to come closer.

“Is she going to—” I started.

“She’ll be fine,” Nine said. “If you hadn’t called me when you did, we’d be having a different conversation right about now. How did this happen?”

I looked over my shoulder and pointed at what remained of Omega.

“That happened.”

Nine looked at the remains of Omega and let out a breath with a hiss.

“Who is, was, that?” she asked, glancing back at the semi-conscious Bug. “Freybug did this?”

“Yes,” I said. “Electroshock ambush, broken arm, imminent death. She must have shifted as a stress response.”

I omitted that it was more likely she shifted because I was getting my ass kicked by Omega. Nine was an excellent doctor, but she was unrelentingly annoying as a babysitter. If she felt Bug lost control, or worse, shifted out of a desire to exact vengeance, there would be consequences.

“It’s possible,” Nine said pensive. “Is that another companion?”

“Future of companions according to the Black Riders,” I said, sitting down and leaning against the wall next to Bug. “Can you get some samples and figure
